Laws takes NCAA Region 2 crown; Laws, Moore, Pletz & McCandlish qualify for nationals

Lindsay Laws claimed the 207 lbs. title at the NCAA Region 2 Championship. Laws, Azariah Moore (180), Jayleah Pletz (124) and Presley McCandlish (160) all punched their tickets to the first NCAA National Championship

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Lindsay Laws captured the 207 lbs. title at the NCAA Region 2 Championship in West Liberty, W.Va. on Saturday (Feb. 21).
 
No. 10 Azariah Moore (180), Jayleah Pletz (124) and Presley McCandlish (160) earned second place finishes in their respective weight classes and punched their tickets to the first ever NCAA Women's Wrestling National Championship.
 
Top-seeded Laws earned her region title by going 3-0 on the weekend. Laws pinned all three opponents she faced and earned the Bald Eagles 21 team points.
 
No. 10 Azariah Moore captured second place in the 180 lbs. division behind two tech falls on Friday and a 10-4 decision in Saturday's semifinals.
 
Jayleah Pletz (124) earned runner-up with two pins on Friday and an 8-0 decision in the semifinals.
 
Presley McCandlish (160) collected silver and a spot in the NCAA Championship behind two pins on Friday and a 14-4 tech fall in the semifinals.
 
The quartet of Laws, Moore, Pletz and McCandlish will compete in the first NCAA Women's Wrestling Championships starting on Friday (Mar 6) at the Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa.
 
Freshman Journie Rodriguez (117) had a great weekend showing and postseason debut where she finished fourth with a 10-2 decision on Friday and a 10-0 tech fall on Saturday before a hard-fought third-place match.
 
Marissa Rumsey (145) rounded out the Bald Eagle placewinners. Rumsey took fifth and finished the weekend with a tech fall and two pins.
 
Lock Haven finished the team competition in sixth place out of 16 teams with 101.5 team points.  
 
Lehigh won the tournament with 151.5 points and had four champions.
